Trading Standards help businesses stay on the right side of the law PDF Print E-mail
Written by Richard Winters
Trading standards officers from Bridgend County Borough Council are stepping up their quest to ensure businesses stay on the right side of consumer law and have all the information they need about trading regulations. The drive is part of National Consumer Week (September 14 – 18), an annual event organised by the Trading Standards Institute (TSI) which seeks to raise consumers’ awareness of a range of issues that impact on their daily lives. This year’s event will highlight the need for businesses and consumers to know their rights and responsibilities.

Bridgend County Borough Council’s Group Manager for Public Protection, Lee Jones said: “Our trading standards professionals work to educate and help traders in Bridgend County Borough so that they deal confidently and fairly with consumers.

“The aim of National Consumer Week is to help traders stay on the right side of consumer law, which not only protects the interests of their customers but also promotes good business.

“This will link in with the 'Know Your Rights Campaign' by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) which is set to be launched during the week.”

Bridgend County Borough Council’s Trading Standards team will be on hand to offer advice and information to consumers and businesses at Bridgend Designer Outlet every day this week between 10am and 3pm.

There will be prize draws, quizzes and freebies for both adults and children. Shoppers are urged to come along if they feel unsure about their rights when buying goods and services. More….

Local businesses will also be offered the opportunity to obtain a Fair Trading Award, designed to sharpen employee’s knowledge of consumer law and to improve customer service skills.

Other trading standards services across the country have also organised activities during the week. Highlights will include roadshows, information stands and displays giving out advice to consumers and businesses, as well as quizzes and surveys. Events will be held at a variety of locations including supermarkets, shopping centres, colleges and universities.

The results of an online TSI survey to find out how well-briefed businesses are on the rights of consumers will also be revealed during National Consumer Week.
