Older people's day marked by Bridgend PDF Print E-mail
Written by Richard Winters
Bridgend marks UK Older People’s Day with a day of celebration and events at Bridgend Recreation Centre. This annual event, which takes place on Thursday 1 October, marks the huge contribution older people make to our society and economy and aims to tackle outdated stereotypes by creating a positive view of later life. Although this is only the third annual UK Older People’s Day, Bridgend County Borough Council’s ‘Never Too Old Action Team’ has been holding similar events for the last five years, supported by its local health and third sector partners which include Age Concern.

The day at Bridgend Recreation Centre, which is aimed at people aged 50 and older, will include exhibitions and advice stalls from local organisations and many free indoor and outdoor events including:

  • Exercise, dance toning, pilates and yoga in the dance studio
  • Aquatherapy in the pool
  • Tea dance and bingo in the Concert Hall
  • Advice on pensions, telecare technology demonstration and a cookery demonstration in the Ogmore café
  • Cardio exercise in the lifestyle suite
  • Hydrotherapy in the hydro gym
  • Tai chi and fit-ball in the Newbridge suite
  • Steam and sauna in the health suite
  • Nordic walking

Councillor Lyn Morgan is the Bridgend County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and the Older Person’s Champion.

Councillor Morgan said: “This is a day for residents who are over 50 but it’s also a public celebration of the huge contribution older people make to Bridgend County Borough.

“Older age comes to us all but it no longer means what it once did. We want to promote the opportunities in our borough to live healthy and active lives, as well as give important information about entitlements, advice and help.”

Councillor Morgan added: “This day sends out an important message about the value Bridgend County Borough Council places on our over-50s community. It is also a reminder to them that they are role models for our younger generation. Our older people play an important role in bringing communities together, sharing their skills and experience and promoting mutual understanding and respect. I’d urge people to find out more about the event on 1 October and see what is on offer.”
