Locks, stocks and sharp shocks at Bryngarw Park PDF Print E-mail
Written by Richard Winters
A family fun day with a serious message has been organised by Bridgend County Borough Council’s Youth Offending Service (YOS). The ‘Locks, Stocks and Short Sharp Shocks’ event at Bryngarw County Park on Saturday 5 September will explore crime and punishment through the ages, focusing on young people. It will question the stereotypes surrounding teenagers now and in the past and ask how much young people and society have changed.

There will be educational displays and information stalls from organisations and agencies across the borough, including the YOS, police, fire service, Children and Young People’s Partnership, Community Safety Partnership and more.

Despite the seemingly solemn theme, the focus will be firmly on fun for visitors, including face painting, a climbing wall, displays by the fire service, competitions, raffles, live music, BBQ and candyfloss.

Visitors can also try out sitting in stocks – but will need to look out for flying, wet sponges!

YOS officer Helen Parsons, who has helped organise the event, said: “The great thing about the day is that the young people and their families who we work with have been actively involved in the preparation and organisation and will help run the event.”

Those due to attend include the Mayor of Bridgend County Borough, Councillor Jeff Tildesley, council Chief Executive Jo Farrar and Madeleine Moon MP.

Councillor Alana Davies, Cabinet Member for Children Young People, will also attend.

Councillor Davies said: “This is a fantastically positive event and I am delighted that young people have had such an input into its organisation. I’d like to thank the Youth Offending Service for putting on this event and I’d encourage everyone to come along and join in the fun. I can’t promise a turn in the stocks though!”

Entry is free and car parking is £2. The cost for individual activities will range from 25p to £1.

All proceeds will go to Ty Hafan and Y Bont Children’s Hospices and victims of crime in the local area.
